The Delaware town of Georgetown, in Sussex County has a population of 6,500 and was the location of Georgetown Raceway in the mid-Sixties. The 4 furlong oval track started out as Delmarva Raceway where racing began in the early 1930s, continuing until 1953, after which the track continued to apply for betting days which they then leased to neighbouring Brandywine Raceway instead. This process continued until 1965 when Georgetown Raceway opened on the site of Delmarva raceway. That inaugural meeting took place on 3rd November 1965, offering a programme of harness races, and continued until the final meeting on 5th September 1971. At that point the owner of the site, John Rollins, sold it for $167,000 and it became derelict.
